Best Buddies Citizens Program

Supports the development of friendships between adults with and without IDD in corporate and civic communities. Many people with IDD have limited opportunities for social interactions after they leave the school environment. This program helps people with IDD become part of mainstream society and creates an inclusive and diverse community for all.

How it Works

  • One-To-One Friendship A person with an intellectual or developmental disability is matched one-to-one with a person without IDD, for at least one calendar year.
  • Talk Once A Week Buddy pairs communicate with one another, once a week, through phone calls, texting, e-mail, social media, or written correspondence.
  • Social Interaction Buddy pairs participate in activities where they are able to spend quality time together, one-on-one, as a part of a group or exclusively, at least once a month.
  • Office Support The Citizens program is supported by Best Buddies staff in the region to plan monthly events for participants and develop and foster new friendship matches.
  • Corporate Involvement Best Buddies’ strengthens ties to the community by forming partnerships with businesses and corporations, which provides company employees the opportunity to make friendships with their peers with IDD.
